Privacy Statement The Airmen’s Stories – P/O E G C Leathem
Ernest George Cuthbert Leathem joined the RAFVR about March 1939 as an Airman u/t Observer.
Called up on 1st September 1939, he completed his training, was commissioned and joined 248 Squadron from 4 BGS West Freugh on 18th March 1940.
He was posted away in late May but rejoined the squadron from No. 1 (C) OTU Silloth on 25th June 1940. He served with the squadron throughout the Battle of Britain.
Leathem was awarded the DFC (gazetted 25th May 1943) as a Flight Lieutenant with 544 Squadron, for photographic-reconnaissance work in Mosquitos.
He was released from the RAF in 1945 as a Flight Lieutenant but rejoined on 20th May 1946 and serving in the Admin and Special Duties Branch.
