Privacy Statement The Airmen’s Stories – Sgt. G W Jefferys
George William Jefferys was born in Hemel Hempstead in 1920. He joined the RAFVR about August 1939 as an Airman u/t Pilot. Called up on September 1st, he completed his training and joined 43 Squadron in late July 1940.
Jefferys was sent to 6 OTU Sutton Bridge on attachment on August 3rd. After further training on Hurricanes he rejoined 43 on August 24th. On September 2nd he destroyed a Me109, on the 4th a Me110 and on the 6th a Me109. He was posted to 46 Squadron on September 15th and on that day shared a Do17.
Jefferys was shot down in combat over Clacton on September 18th 1940, in Hurricane V7442. He baled out but was killed when his parachute failed to open.
Jeffreys was 20 years old.
He is buried in St Michael’s churchyard, Winterboume, Wiltshire.
