Privacy Statement The Airmen’s Stories – F/O R F Inness
Richard Frederick Inness was born in Calcutta, India on 4th January 1918. He joined the RAF on a short service commission in August 1938. He was serving with 152 Squadron at Acklington by February 1940.
He damaged a Me109 on 25th July, destroyed a Me110 on 13th August and was slightly wounded in this action.
A bullet had entered the aircraft from astern and struck his right elbow after passing through the armour plating.
On 26th September Inness shared in the destruction of a Ju88 and destroyed a Me109 on the 27th.
In early 1941 Inness was posted to 53 OTU Heston as an instructor. He commanded 130 Squadron from October 1943 to February 1944, operating with Spitfire Vs and then 222 Squadron until June 1944, operating with Spitfire IXs.
Inness was released from the RAF in 1946 as a Squadron Leader.
He died on 27th November 2009.
