Privacy Statement The Airmen’s Stories – P/O G E Hill

 

George Edward Hill, from Hampshire, joined the RAF on 13th March 1939 on a short service commission.

After completing his training he joined 245 Squadron on 6th November 1939, at that time it was equipped with Battles and Blenheims. It began to re-equip with Hurricanes in March 1940.

Over Dunkirk on 1st June Hill claimed a Me109 destroyed. He served with 245 throughout the Battle of Britain before being posted to 2 CFS Cranwell on 6th December 1940 for an instructors course.

His subsequent service is currently undocumented until 31st March 1944 when he was killed serving with 13 MU. Mosquito NFIII MM578 lost a wing in a dive and crashed at Cockayne Hatley, Bedfordshire. P/O WG Allen DFM was also killed.

Hill was 28 and is buried in Attleborough Cemetery, Nuneaton, Warwickshire.

Hill’s brother, P/O David Hill, died on 28th September 1939, aged 20.

He was in Oxford N4786 of 15 SFTS which collided with Harvard N7086 of the same unit. P/O JR Rogers in the Harvard was also killed.

David Hill is buried in Lossiemouth Burial Ground.
